MASTERS TOURNAMENT

April 10, 2022

Scottie Scheffler

Augusta, Georgia, USA

Butler Cabin

Q. We welcome the world to Butler Cabin. What a pleasure it is to be here with Chairman Fred Ridley and another fantastic week. Hard to describe. It really is.

FRED RIDLEY: It sure was, Jim. After two historic years, it was wonderful to have all our patrons back. It was great to hear all the roars out there today.

Q. There were plenty. There certainly were. We are joined here in the cabin, Hideki Matsuyama, last year's winner, about to present the green jacket to your new champion Scottie Scheffler.

FRED RIDLEY: Scottie, your play today and all week was spectacular. I thought the 3rd hole was really a turning point. When you holed that bump-and-run from below the green, you had to be really excited when you heard the reaction of the patrons.

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: I was very excited. A bit surprised too. It was definitely not a shot I expected to see go in, but it definitely changed -- I wouldn't say changed the complexion of the day, but it definitely got things rolling for me. I played some really solid golf after that.

Q. Sure did. How did you stay so calm?

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: I may have looked calm on the outside, but as Hideki knows, it's a long day. It's a tough day. I just tried to keep my head down and execute shots.

Q. As Chairman mentioned, there were so many roars out there today. Did you pay any attention to them at all?

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Not really. I was fortunate to put myself in a position where I was in control of the tournament today, so I didn't have to worry about what anyone else was doing out there. If I took care of my stuff and played good solid golf, I felt like I would get the job done. That was the goal going into today was to just keep my head down.

And I did see at one point that Rory posted 7-under, I believe, and then Cam and I were kind of getting a little tight there after he birdied 11. I made a huge par putt there. After that he made the mistake on 12, and I had a nice up-and-down, and after that just played some good golf.

Q. When did you first start dreaming of this moment to be wearing that jacket that you are going to have here in just a minute?

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: That's a good question. Probably the first time it popped into my mind was Friday in the afternoon after we got done.

Q. Really?

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: I never really make it this far. I always dream of being here and competing. I can't put into words what it means that I'll be able to come back here for a lifetime, hopefully, and I can't speak highly enough of this place.

Q. Where do you go from here? You've won four of the last six starts. You're a Masters champion. What's next?

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: I want to go home. (Laughing). I'm pretty tired right now. We're going to go home and celebrate a little bit, and honestly, I don't know. I'm really at a loss for words right now. I'm kind of glad I had a little hiccup there on the last hole. It made me a little less emotional so I can get through this interview, but --

Q. That was -- it was a human moment. It was. That was such a sweet moment with Meredith walking to go sign the card and all your family there in tow. I know for this family it is all about family inside the Scheffler clan, isn't it?

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: I can't thank my family enough. My parents and my sisters have made so many sacrifices for me over the years, and we've all dreamed about just making it to this tournament, and it's emotional just getting in the field.

So to have the honor of winning the golf tournament is so special, and for them all to be here with us, and Meredith's family was here as well, that was a really special moment.

Q. Well, Fred, it's that time.

FRED RIDLEY: Hideki, your play last spring was an inspiration to so many people, especially in your home country of Japan. You've been a great champion, and we look forward to watching you compete and wear that green jacket for many years to come.

Now we would be honored if you would place the green jacket on our newest champion Scottie Scheffler.

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Thank you, Hideki. Oh, shoulder didn't work so good. There we go.

FRED RIDLEY: That's great. Congratulations, Scottie.

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Thank you very much.

FRED RIDLEY: Proud of you.

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Thank you.

Q. Scottie Scheffler, there was emotion in there after all. He just has a great way of hiding it, doesn't he? Came here as the No. 1 player in the world, and he showed us why. Now he has the world of golf at the highest level in the palm of his hands. He is the Masters champion.
