AUGUSTA NATIONAL WOMEN'S AMATEUR

March 29, 2022

Avery Zweig

Augusta, Georgia, USA

Quick Quotes

Q. What are your first impressions of the course?

AVERY ZWEIG: Well, first impressions, I was fortunate enough to be able to come out here and play a couple practice rounds about last month. So definitely knew the greens would be an area of interest and can say that that's only grown since I've gotten here.

They're really quick, which makes it tough. It's a long layout, varied slopes, a lot of elevated greens. So you have to be really strategic on not only where you want to land it but also understanding that you're going to miss greens and knowing ideally where to miss those greens and where to maybe have some chip shots.

It's pretty forgiving off the tee, so just as long as you're in the fairway and hit it far and straight, typically that's what works out, but especially here. And having really good putting speed.

So I'm excited. After this, I'm going to go and hit a few putts on the putting green.

Q. This is your first time here, but not only that, you're one of the youngest, if not the youngest in the field here. What were your expectations coming in?

AVERY ZWEIG: I definitely play or try to play without any expectations first of all. As far as experience goes, I knew it was going to be absolutely incredible. That's what everyone says. So I think I really just -- this game that I have and trying to manage it around here but also understanding that this is a really incredible opportunity and I want to take in every moment as much as I possibly can.

It's only going to get more fun as the week progresses. So as far as tournament play goes, I think just my normal game. I want to have my feels and stick to those. Just we'll see.

I like my caddie, like the course. It will be fun.

Q. Did you talk to anybody else beforehand who's played here before to get some advice on how to handle the course?

AVERY ZWEIG: I did, yeah. A friend of mine, Kenzie Wright, she played here last year. She told us a little bit of insight. It was all about managing the greens and the approaches. Also she said it was the best week of her life. She actually did a post before this, like good luck to everyone, and everyone does so they leave a lasting impression here at the Augusta Women's National Amateur.

Q. You know you're going to be playing Augusta National on Friday for sure but a chance to play on Saturday as well. Is it kind of tough not to look forward to that knowing you still have two rounds to go?

AVERY ZWEIG: Not really. I'm fully aware of the fact that I have 36 holes of really good golf that needs to be done. Again, there's stuff that they have for us every day that's fun, and just being out here is fun. So they make it really easy to be present in the moment, and I think I'm really trying to draw off of that and use that to my advantage this week.

Q. Do you think your youth is going to be an advantage this week?

AVERY ZWEIG: I don't like to think of it as an advantage or a disadvantage. It's just I've got a lot of amateur golf and junior golf left in my career. So I've got a lot of time to figure it out. I think that having that sort of wide eyed look could be an advantage, but at the end of the day, I'm a player just like everyone else is.

Oldest versus youngest here, we all got in off of our ranking, and we all deserve to be here.
