MAUI JIM'S MAUI INVITATIONAL

November 23, 2021

.Eric Bovaird

Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Chaminade Silverswords

Postgame Press Conference

Notre Dame - 90, Chaminade - 64

ERIC BOVAIRD: I thought it was a tale of two halves. Obviously we played really well in the first half and then in the second half we came out extremely flat and that was it.

Q. How frustrating is it, especially given what happened yesterday to have this happen?

ERIC BOVAIRD: Pretty frustrating. It's probably the most frustrating I've been in a while. You thought you would learn from last night, you have to come out immediately, and we talked to them at the halftime, that first media timeout, winning that first one and coming out with that energy and that passion and for some reason we just came out really flat again. So we're going to have to change things up one way or the other.

Q. What is the hardest part about this loss?

ERIC BOVAIRD: The fact that I know with experience that you got to put together two good halves. But first you got to put together one good half and if you can get to halftime and you still are winning or in the game then you got a chance to win the game because you only got 20 more minutes to go.

Even to get that -- I thought we should have had the lead going into halftime if guys would have executed exactly the way they want, missed a layup and then gave up a two to finish the half.

So it's just, you know, to put yourself in a position to potentially get a win you got to be, you got to have a really good, you got to have two really good halves. Unfortunately we only had one.

Q. Is there any positives to take away from going into league play?

ERIC BOVAIRD: There's always some positives, not as many as I would like, but there is some. I thought we started moving the ball better than we did the previous night. We did some better things offensively. We had moments of good defense that we see things that we need to make adjustments on, but you're always learning. We are getting -- first step is that we can get better. Now we got to be able to do it tomorrow.

Q. I know you just got done with the Irish, but have you or your coaching staff, have you had a chance to scout Butler and what are your impressions of Butler?

ERIC BOVAIRD: Oh, well, I haven't. I watched a little bit on TV today, but we have, one of our assistant coaches assigned to working on them and he's been watching them. So I honestly, I watched a little bit the first day and a little bit the second day, but I honestly don't know hardly anything about them. But I will by 6 o'clock tomorrow.

Q. You never want to give up 21 points and you don't score. What is your mentality as a coach, is there anything you can do in that moment or is it just the fact that shots just weren't falling?

ERIC BOVAIRD: No, it wasn't a matter of the shots. We had told them, you know, some of the keys to beating teams like this is winning 50/50 balls we call it. And we came out the second half and right off the bat they picked up two loose balls that we didn't get. So that's a sign where things aren't going to go well, because we have to outfight, we have to outrun, we have to outwork these teams. Most of them are bigger and stronger and a lot of them are more skilled, so we got to beat them in different ways, we can't just try to go toe for toe with them and try to outscore them.
