St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland
Quick Quotes
Q. How are you both?
PIERS MORGAN: We're a bit weatherbeaten. I feel like a two-ton truck has won me over.
CONNOR SYME: Likewise.
Q. How has this round been? I've heard a few things. I missed 17 but I heard you hit the Old Course Hotel.
PIERS MORGAN: I nailed it. I hit a massive booming drive and I unfortunately ended up in the hotel pond and hit a second one and really nailed that one and it was in the middle of the fairway, and all I had to do was take a 5-iron up to the green and birdie it and move on, and instead I drilled it around 30 yards along the round. So that summed my round up, really. Great hope and then the Hope sucked out of me and reduced to rubble.
Q. How would you sum up Connor and Piers, as well your round today and this tournament so far?
PIERS MORGAN: How would you sum it up?
CONNOR SYME: It was tough going, and like we were just chatting about over there, I think we both need some help with our putting to be honest. Hopefully, we finished strong today, and Piers had a good one on 17 and I had a nice putt on 15. Hopefully that will lead us into a strong finish tomorrow and hopefully make it for Sunday.
Q. How has it been for you both? Obviously it's a serious tournament for you, Connor, and I know the amateurs take it seriously as well, but it's got that fun element to it as well. How much do you both enjoy working together as a team as well?
CONNOR SYME: Obviously it's a very unique format for us, and you know, we all love having the celebrities around and getting to meet new people, and you know, it's just a very unique tournament which we all love playing in. You don't get much better than the Home of Golf and the courses we get to play as well. So it's a very, very special tournament and yeah, it's just loads of fun.
PIERS MORGAN: I think Connor really liked my historical motivational speeches. So when things were really grim, when the wind was really roaring, I reminded him of Nelson Mandela's words, "Everything seems impossible until it's done."
And then when things got even worse, I turned to Winston Churchill for inspiration and reminded him that Churchill's definition of success was "going from failure to failure with no discernible loss of enthusiasm." And that was the spirit that carried us through really.
Q. So he's been A great help to you. Have you been a good help to him? You're a local and know St Andrews better than anyone surely.
PIERS MORGAN: I thought that as well. I did say the great thing about having a young up-and-coming Scottish pro, these conditions he's used to; we'll roar up the leaderboard. Hasn't worked out yet but the tournament is still alive. We are further ahead than where we started by one.
CONNOR SYME: Keeping moving up.
