THE 149TH OPEN

July 16, 2021

Jon Rahm

Sandwich, Kent, England, UK

Mixed Zone

Q. Jon, thanks for joining us. Can you please reflect on your second round here at The Open.

JON RAHM: Great round. Very similar to yesterday tee-to-green. Obviously yesterday we had a little bit more wind and I made some putts early on, and I think that was the key, right.

The par putt on 5, just making par on 5 with how the hole went and making birdies on 6 and 7 really got me going. I got confidence and played really good golf on the last 14 holes.

Q. There is a little bit of a gap to make up on Louis over the weekend. What I can hark back to is 2019, the Irish Open in Lahinch. I remember passing you when I was cycling into Lahinch about 7:00 in the morning. You were one of the first out and then you went and hit 64, 62 in a similar enough set up. Is having that kind of -- knowing you have that ability to go low on a weekend on a links course, beachside course with different variable breezes and stuff like that, is that handy to know, and is there a chance that we could see that over the next two days?

JON RAHM: There is always a chance. I would say even though I love Lahinch, Royal St George's is a little bit more difficult of a golf course and the setup is a little tougher. The year in Lahinch, there wasn't much rough so I could take advantage of just hitting drivers and even be a little erratic for the most part, and give myself birdie chances.

With that said, you know, I can play this level of golf on the weekend as well. I can play really good. It can wet better as well. I think I give myself a chance to catch up by Sunday.

But we will see tomorrow. Tomorrow is the most important day obviously right now. If I can put another solid round like I did today, post a good number, and hope that the leaders don't go too low, I think that's the job.

So all I can control and what I can do, and, yes, I have the confidence that I can go low on a weekend to win the tournament. You know, hoping I don't have to do anything extravagant, but if it needs to be done, I'll try and I have the confidence I can do it.
