JOHN DEERE CLASSIC

July 8, 2021

Cameron Davis

Silvis, Illinois, USA

TPC Deere Run

Quick Quotes

Q. 4-under today, just talk about your round a little bit and what it was like out there.

CAMERON DAVIS: Yeah, I played really well today. First 11 holes were pretty much just cruising around like I was last week. I was hitting my driver really well. I was putting really well. Yeah, it was a really solid round of golf. It was a little scratchy towards the end, but the swing didn't feel too much different, just hit the ball in a couple of rough spots. Pleased with a good solid first round, and yeah, I'm definitely a little more fatigued than I was after the first round last week, so I'm just going to take it easy this afternoon.

Q. How did you celebrate your victory last week?

CAMERON DAVIS: Yeah, it was about 11:00 when it was time to go back to the hotel, so my caddie was driving around the streets trying to find something that was still open on 4th of July, and the only place in town was Five Guys. So it was a couple of burgers and a milkshake, and that worked well for me at that point in time.

Q. You learned just recently that you got a spot in the Open Championship. Can you just explain that to us, please?

CAMERON DAVIS: Yeah, I got married last year in September and decided to start the green card process to make traveling in and out of the country so much easier, but unfortunately six months I'm not going to be able to leave the States while that's getting processed. That means I'm not able to go next week, but yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing my family and celebrating back in Seattle next week and recharging a little bit because this week is already a bit of a grind to get through. I'm pretty tired. It'll be nice to relax.

Q. Can you explain the fatigue factor? How is it different coming from Detroit?

CAMERON DAVIS: Well, I did stay up until about 2:00 a.m., watched a rerun of the tournament. They had the coverage going again, and I was so excited I tried to ride the wave as much as I could. Monday was a bit of a tough travel day. My flight got canceled, so I had to drive on over, so that day didn't exactly go as smoothly as I would have liked. I would have liked to have gotten a bit more rest.

I just tried to take it really easy, just nine holes Tuesday, nine holes yesterday in the pro-am, just lots of rest, and by the time I got to today, for most of the round, I started to feel back to normal.

I'll do a good job this afternoon of that. I've got a late tee time tomorrow, got plenty of time to relax, and yeah, hopefully by the time I get to tomorrow I'll be back to 100 percent and ready to go again.

Q. Not too much time on the range this afternoon?

CAMERON DAVIS: Yeah, the swing still feels fine, to be honest. I hit a couple of squirrelly shots the last few holes there, but it still feels okay. Body still feels fine. I'm sure I'll come back tomorrow, work on the same stuff again and go. I've got a pretty relaxed attitude to the game right now, and I don't think going out on the range and grinding to find a little something right now is going to help me that much for tomorrow anyway.

Q. Does it feel like you're free wheeling now, you've got that first win, playing with house money?

CAMERON DAVIS: A little bit. A little bit. Still having to concentrate and do a good job, but this week I feel a little bit more relaxed than I might have otherwise.

Q. What's your history on this course? Is this your first time here?

CAMERON DAVIS: It's my second time. I played two years ago.

Q. What is it about this course? What do you have to do to score well here and to win?

CAMERON DAVIS: Well, the greens are receptive right now, and the fairways are firm. It's really important to be in the fairway because from that point you can pretty much go at any flag at the moment. They're just sticking on the greens. The wedges are spinning. The greens are really nice. If you hit a putt on line it's going to go in every time at this point.

You just need to get the ball in play off the tee. There's quite a few mid to long irons into greens actually, so you need to -- you just need to kind of stay out of the rough. The rough is rough. It gets kind of squirrelly, and it's hard to read the lies. I kind of had a miss on 9. Just didn't read the lie very well. So keeping in the short grass is important, but that's the case most weeks that you can definitely get on a good run and make a lot of birdies, because there's a lot of short irons, as well, just by hitting the fairway.

Q. That being said, having to hit the fairway, are you comfortable on the tee boxes here?

CAMERON DAVIS: Yeah, a lot of them do, some of them don't. Pick a good target, make a good swing, you can still hit them. For the most part today, that worked. Got a little bit of work on some of them to hit the fairway tomorrow, but should be all right.

Q. Like your position after the first round as of right now?

CAMERON DAVIS: Yeah, I had no expectations for today really. I wasn't sure if I was going to keep playing well or if there was going to be a bit of a lull after all that, but I'm very happy to keep it going.
