Quick Quotes
Q. Beau, how would you characterize your round today?
BEAU HOSSLER: Really strong start for sure. Left a few wedge shots out there that I would have liked back, but outside of that it was good. I drove the ball in play all day, which is kind of the name of the game out here.
The course isn't super long, but if you're out of position it's very difficult. Got off to a great start on the front nine. Certainly is less stressful nine, but I would say honestly all in all the back nine you have an opportunity to score lower, but you got to hit some really precise tee balls and really precise iron shots.
Unfortunately I didn't really hit anything that close on the back nine. All in all, 5-under to start is always a plus.
Q. I know the game maybe hasn't been going the way you would like recently. What have you been working on to get your game to where you can put up scores like this?
BEAU HOSSLER: Yeah, I agree. It's been a very difficult year for me. I made significant changes this off-season in my golf swing that were in my opinion absolutely necessary.
My ball striking has been poor for two, three years, at least substandard for what I know I'm capable of. Dana Dahlquist has helped me tremendously. Do a ton of work with him. I am very thankful for that.
With that said, unfortunately you feel like you have it and then it doesn't show up in the tournament or whatever it may be.
But I've seen flashes of really good play starting at home, starting in December, and just haven't really brought it out here, felt as comfortable. Obviously the courses are a lot more demanding, the pin locations, the rough, et cetera. The margin for error is way slimmer.
It's a matter of getting comfortable in all different situations, wind directions, pin locations, et cetera. Fortunately I think I'm trending in that direction.
I had a really nice weekend at Palmetto. Finished 19th but trended nicely. Only made one bogey on the weekend, so pretty strong. State of the game is improving. Hopefully don't jinx myself.
No, it's starting to feel really good.
Q. Is it hard to keep the confidence up when you're trying new things, especially in what you're trying to do when it's not going right on the golf course to stick with it?
BEAU HOSSLER: Yeah, I mean, golf is all confidence really, especially at this level. Every player out here can win on a given week. I mean, the talent is outstanding.
With that being said, the depth of the field you can't afford to struggle. It's very difficult to struggle to a Top 10. There are a few guys that can, but as a whole it's tough to do.
You got to be on top of your game, play smart, try and get the most out of your round whether you're struggling or playing well. I've tried to do that. Tried to stay patient, as difficult as it is.
Like you said, it's a tough game. It's a tough game when you're struggling and sometimes a tough game when you're playing well. I think with that said, seeing the progress, I feel like I have a good blueprint, and hopefully I can continue to execute it well.
