Southern Hills Country Club
THE MODERATOR: Welcome back to the 2021 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship. We're here at Southern Hills Country Club, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Joined by Bob Sowards. Put up an even par 70 today. Bob, that's a really tough golf course, we got wind kind of kicking in and you came in at level par. Pretty good play on your end.
BOB SOWARDS: Yeah, I played solid. I hit a lot of fairways. I kept it out of the rough for the most part which did we in yesterday. Got up-and-down 2-2 out of the bunkers, so a little better than yesterday, giving away so many shots. But pretty pleased with even.
Q. Can you take us through the birdies at 12 and 17 and then the 18th hole as well.
BOB SOWARDS: I know 17 I hit it in the right bunker with a 3-wood, hit a perfect bunker shot out to about I don't know 18 inches and tapped it in.
12, I hit a good drive in the fairway and a little chippy wedge to about 15, 18 feet and made that.
18, I finally got it in the fairway. Felt like I could finally get it on the green and hit a terrible second shot way left, but the third shot was actually really easy. If I just get it left of the hole it trundles right down to the hole. I just whiffed it and it rolled down to the front of the green and I had no chance. But all in all I'm happy.
THE MODERATOR: What's your mindset for tomorrow? What are you trying to do, play good golf, but are you looking at low club pro, are you looking at the leaderboard? Right now you're T-11. What's your thought?
BOB SOWARDS: I just want to try to, I mean my caddie's got me trying to stick to one shot at a time. I'm just going to try to play the best I can. I'll look at the leaderboards and just because I'm a leaderboard guy. But I'm not real concerned how I finish, I just want to play well and see where I stack up.
Q. One of the biggest story lines going around the course is how tough the back nine was playing today and you'll probably be one of the few handful of guys to shoot under par on that back nine. What about those nine holes was so tough today?
BOB SOWARDS: Well it's long and for me there's a lot of dogleg lefts and it favors a draw. I don't draw it very well, so it's just a hard stretch, especially the last five, four holes, five holes. Just a hard stretch of golf. You don't have to miss it by very much to be penalized a lot. The wind makes it a lot tougher.
Q. Since the Thursday we had a southwest wind, now we have a northeast wind, how have you seen the course differentiate between those two winds?
BOB SOWARDS: In my yardage book I write down what I hit. So it goes from gap wedge to 5-iron and things like that different holes. But it's a great golf course and I look forward to playing it again tomorrow.
Q. How excited are you for the opportunity tomorrow? I mean, you're in a great position and you got a great golf course and you got a Sunday at a major?
BOB SOWARDS: Yeah, I'm very excited. The only major I played on the Senior Tour was at Oak Hill, played pretty good, finished 21st or something like that, but hopefully I can beat that and make a couple birdies and move up the leaderboard.
