The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island
Quick Quotes
THE MODERATOR: Welcome back to the 2021 PGA Championship here at The Ocean Course, Kiawah Island, South Carolina. Very pleased to be joined by Cam Davis.
Cam, you opened up with a 3-under 69 today which included a triple on 6. So you must have played the rest of it pretty well.
CAM DAVIS: Yeah, it was a really solid round other than one kind of really poor swing. Other than that, most of the round was really solid. I'm pleased with the way I finished, those difficult holes down the finishing stretch there. Plenty of good stuff for tomorrow.
THE MODERATOR: Maybe talk about that 11th hole, eagle.
CAM DAVIS: Straight downwind, the ball was going a long way once you landed the ball on the fairway, and I had an 8-iron in which is something I wasn't really prepared for in the practice rounds. I had a perfect full high 8-iron sort of number and just hit it perfect and landed just on the in front of the green and stopped pretty quick. I had a 12-footer or so. I don't know exactly how long it was, and it was outside right edge putt. Felt like really solid shots. Yeah, good hole and good for the score.
Q. How important was 7 given what you had done on 6?
CAM DAVIS: It was good to hit -- the drivers that I hit off the tee leading up to 6 had all been into the wind, and tried to hit a low one under the wind, and 6 is the first I tried to hit right of the wind and get up in the air.
It was really nice, on 7 to hit the same shot but just commit to it a little better and see it fly a little better. From that point onwards, I had a decent handle on it but I needed to tore get about that one on 6, just one bad strike.
Q. You were clearly able to do that. Was it a conscious decision?
CAM DAVIS: Yeah, I knew I was swinging pretty well. So that was the first one I hit that far out of the toe and it was just the wrong hole to do it.
Didn't really worry me too much. It was a bit disappointing to come out of it with a triple because I thought I had a good drop in the sand. I thought I had just found a nice flat spot but just took a half-roll into the side in a footprint and from there became kind of a battle. From then onwards, next hole, I hit a good tee shot and kind of kept it rolling and yeah, wasn't too bad.
Q. How proud are you with those last five holes because there were a lot of guys who came unstuck there, and you were able to essentially keep your place at the top of this leaderboard when others fell back in that stretch.
CAM DAVIS: Yeah, just good, solid golf. Kept the ball in decent spots on the fairway. I had a good shot on 18, that was a funky lie there and managed to hit a great shot to keep it going. With the wind not being super strong, those final holes didn't have as much teeth as they might have otherwise, like the last couple days in the practice rounds, those holes were a little more interesting in terms of the shots that you had to hit and how long they were playing.
But yeah, I just hit good shot in the middle of the green, 17, which is really all you really want to do there.
And 18, the sole par after I hit a good tee shot, just took a poor bounce. Good little momentum savers, good, consistent shots kept the stress off and try and keep that going for the rest of the week.
Q. You said at the start of the week that the key for you is being cool, calm and collected through all of this. Do you feel like you were able to do that right throughout?
CAM DAVIS: Helps when you're hitting the ball in pretty good spots and not really having to stress too much. There was one hole where I was a little bit frazzled I guess but for the most part, I was just doing my own thing, playing a golf course the way that I see fits my game and that's really all I can do and just try and chill out in between shots.
Q. You going to keep it chill tonight even though you see your name up there?
CAM DAVIS: I'm not going to look for it. Go home, have a relatively quick turnaround, play in the morning tomorrow. Off to bed pretty quick.
