BRITISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

July 19, 2002

Soren Hansen

MUIRFIELD, SCOTLAND

STEWART McDOUGAL: Soren Hansen, 69, 5 under par for the championship. Did you think you would be in this position after two rounds?

SOREN HANSEN: Not really. I have been in good form the last few weeks, but to be in the club house after two rounds in the Open is something special, I must say.

Q. Are you disappointed there are only about seven of us in here? How do you react to that?

SOREN HANSEN: No, it's still a long day out there. Ernie is leading us all at 7 under. Probably nobody believes in a Dane anymore, but they should -- I mean, I didn't really play well to talk about me today. I didn't really play that well from tee to green. And it's just a long bit grind and it doesn't look like that on the score card because there weren't any drop shots. But I had a lot of up-and-downs and a lot of good putts for par today, so there's a bit of work for me really this weekend. I would try to sort it out on the range this afternoon.

Q. Ernie just shot 29 out there. Is the course playing that easy? Is it there for the taking because of the conditions?

SOREN HANSEN: I'm surprised there aren't that many better scores, to be honest. It's not as bouncey and the course is obviously very fair, but we can't take away that Ernie is a really great player. But then again, if you struggle a little bit, the pins are a bit on slope here and there and struggle a little bit and don't quite get the shot, you are going to struggle. But I'm surprised that you don't see better scores for the last two days, because it hasn't really blown and the course is wet today and the balls stop pretty quick. Right now I would say the course is a sleeping beast really. If it starts blowing it will be real tricky.

Q. Soren, you're obviously joking there when you say people should believe in the Danish players, but you are right, you have had a great couple of years and the Swedish also, why is that?

SOREN HANSEN: I think Thomas started off, showed the way for a lot of years, winning a lot of tournaments, played good major tournaments as well, and I think for Anders and myself, it's been hard work but we've been seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and we've shown that it can be done and I think it's a little bit to Thomas's credit.

Q. This is your only second Open. Are you still in the stage you are happy to be part of that Championship?

SOREN HANSEN: I am. Last year, I think I missed by two and messing up on the last three holes, I remember clearly actually and I decided to come into -- if I played well, I could be in contention, no doubt about that. I have the confidence to say that. But I wasn't quite playing well in practice the first company of days, but having said that, I'm putting well, chipping well, and I have a pretty strong mind, but I must say it's something else being up there after two rounds in the Open, no doubt about it.

STEWART McDOUGAL: Soren, thank you very much.
