INDIANA UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL MEDIA CONFERENCE

February 28, 2023

Trayce Jackson-Davis

Indianapolis, Indiana, USA

Postgame Media Conference

Iowa 90, Indiana 68

TRAYCE JACKSON-DAVIS: Like, honestly we weren't into the ball. I feel like our nail and slot, just they weren't there tonight. Because I'm never supposed to -- I'm supposed to just be there, and I was switching a lot onto the guards, and usually that's the nail that takes that, and then he veers out if he's getting beat. And we just didn't have that.

It was just a full, just, meltdown of our defensive game plan. They exploited it and they took advantage of it and they hit shots, so credit to them.

Q. You're a senior and a captain. Do you say a lot in the locker room? Do you need to, or do guys maybe just understand that a performance like that?

TRAYCE JACKSON-DAVIS: Obviously everybody is upset after the game last weekend and coming back and doing this, it's not what we stand for. Everyone's upset. That's not much to be said. We just have to come in tomorrow and come in Thursday and work.

Q. With as well as you guys played at Purdue, and as bad as you guys were tonight, how does that happen? What happens when the difference is that big?

TRAYCE JACKSON-DAVIS: I just I feel like it just was the defensive end of the floor. We scored 70 points almost, and they scored 90. I know last time we gave up more than 80; it's been a minute. But yeah they played up-tempo, they played fast and we tried to slow it down. We were playing at their pace, and they took advantage of it.

Q. Coming off a big emotional swing of the win in West Lafayette, was there any hangover, and is there any hangover from this game to you guys, or are you going to be able to let this go?

TRAYCE JACKSON-DAVIS: Yeah, you've just got to -- I don't really feel like there was really a hangover because we already beat Purdue once, and so we knew that we could do it again.

But at the same time, a game like this, you have to wash it out because we have got another game Sunday, and we've got to get ready for that and prepare for it.

So we've got to have a quick mentality, quick turnaround and get ready to work in practice.

Q. Your defense, it's been a while, like you said, since there's been a game like this. Are these the ones that just kill you inside a little bit because it's been so long since you've had a performance like this this?

TRAYCE JACKSON-DAVIS: Yeah, this has been awhile since a team really dictated their tempo on offense, and they did that and that's a credit to them. They are obviously a great team, and they shoot the ball really well. And they came off a very emotional win against Michigan State, so they are kind of hot already. They came in and they shot lights out, we just never had a chance to respond and we never responded.

Q. The start when they come out 8-0 like that, was that a matter of you guys not being ready from the tip or they hit tough shots or what did you see there?

TRAYCE JACKSON-DAVIS: I think we got Kris going a little bit. He got a wide open one. I think he got two open ones, actually, and when you get a guy like that going like that, his teammates feed off of that.

And so I feel like after Kris got going, a lot of other guys started hitting shots and then all chaos just breaks down, and then defensively we just broke down.

So I think that's the biggest thing that happened. I think we still got back into the game a little bit when it was like 20 -- maybe it was 21-24 but they were just already -- they were already comfortable and when a team like that that shoots the ball like that gets comfortable, it's hard to beat.
